Description: This swallowtail nylon flag was designed by Rachel Misch and dates from 1990. This red and blue flag has eight small white stars on the top and bottom and a large star in the center with a seal of the City of South Euclid, Ohio. The large, seventeenth star recognizes Ohio as the seventeenth state admitted to the Union. The dimensions are 91 cm by 155 cm. This flag has not been cataloged. The South Euclid Historical Society donated this flag to the Ohio Historical Society in 1991. Nela Park was established in 1911 when General Electric bought an abandoned vineyard seven miles from Cleveland in what was then the rural countryside. The facility is named for the Cleveland company (National Electric Lamp Company) that was acquired by GE in 1900 in an effort to standardize the size of light bulb bases. Nela Park was designated a National Historic Place in 1975. Presently, Nela Park is the world headquarters for General Electric's Lighting Division, one of the company's seven divisions. Contrary to the caption, the road that bifurcates the image is Noble Road; Taylor Road is located four blocks south. Nela Park is the headquarters of GE Lighting, and is located in East Cleveland, Ohio. Today, GE Lighting is a part of GE's Consumer and Industrial business, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Nela Park still serves as the operating headquarters of the lighting division. Development of the site was started in 1911, when the National Electric Lamp Company (NELA) was dissolved and absorbed into General Electric. It was the first industrial park in the world and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The campus emulates a university setting, and the dominant architectural style is Georgian Revival. The 92-acre (370,000 square mile) campus is home to GE's Lighting & Electrical Institute, which was founded in 1933. Each December, Nela Park features a world-famous Christmas lighting display, which culminates in a miniature version of the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C., designed by GE Lighting. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows the south side of the Case Main Building. The letters CSAS (Case School of Applied Science) can be seen in stone at the top of the building. The original Case Main Building, formerly located on the site which is now the Case Quadrangle, was designed by John Eisenmann, who was not only the school’s first professor of civil engineering and a pioneer in structural steel construction, but who also designed the flag for the state of Ohio. Completed in 1885, and similar to the Adelbert College building, the 3-story building with basement and attic was built of bricks made on Murray Hill, a fireproof design. However, on October 27, 1886, a heavy explosion and fire destroyed most of the building. The architect for the new building was Clarence O. Arey and reopened in 1888. In 1892, the attic was converted to a gymnasium and in 1896 electricity was installed in the building. Additional remodeling was done in 1940 and 1948. The building was demolished in 1972, and its stones used to build the Michelson-Morely fountain and the Case Institute of Technology sign at the corner of Euclid Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard, as well as being given to Alumni of Case as souvenirs. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Cleveland Museum of Art viewed from University Circle. The Cleveland Museum of Art is located at 11150 East Boulevard in Cleveland, Ohio and is on the north side of Wade Lagoon. The museum was founded in 1913 and opened on June 6, 1916. The art museum was funded by Cleveland industrialists Hinman B. Hurlbut, John Huntington, and Horace Kelley. The Wade Park property was donated for the museum site by Jeptha H. Wade II. The Cleveland firm of Hubbell & Benes designed the neoclassic building which was constructed of white Georgian marble. The cost of of the building was $1.25 million. University Circle is bounded by Wade Park Ave. on the north; E. 105th on the west; and the RTA tracks on the east and south sides. The circle occupies 488 acres. It was in 1799 that the land was first settled with the establishment of Nathaniel Doan's tavern at what is now E. 107th St. and Euclid Ave., but was then called Doan's Corners. University Circle began to take shape in the 1880s when Western Reserve University moved its campus from Hudson, OH, to Euclid Ave. in 1883. Case School of Applied Science moved from downtown Cleveland to a location adjacent to WRU in 1885 (eventually to be federated with its neighbor in 1967 as Case Western Reserve University.). In the same decade, Jeptha H. Wade donated to the City of Cleveland a large piece of land that adjoined the WRU campus, stipulating that the land be used as a public park with an art gallery. The name of the area was taken from a streetcar stop on a line running on Euclid to a turnaround at E. 107th known as University Circle. View on Ohio Memory.
